A New Year…

It’s a new year, and with it comes new projects, designs and ideas.  One of my friends and I decided to tackle “That Quilt” this year. (Dear Jane) We had started it over a year ago, but didn’t get very far.  So we’ve decided to shore each other up and keep each other on task as we navigate our way through this year-long project.

I’ve thought on it and come to the conclusion that I didn’t get very far on my Dear Jane quilt for primarily one reason.  I’m just not cut out to make 4 1/2″ finished blocks.  Also, I need a larger quilt as this one will definitely be going on my bed and it’s a king size.  Once I figured out the reason for the holding back, the rest was easy.  Make the blocks bigger!  So, I’ve changed them to 6″ finished blocks, which I’m more comfortable with making.  I will have to repeat some of the pieced triangle blocks (24.. I think) to make it work…but that’s ok.  My quilt will end up finishing at about 111″ x 111″.  That’ll work!

Now I’ve got to decide on fabrics.  I thought about batiks, or scrappy blenders, or reproduction, or …..the choices go on and on.  Then I found a fat quarter bundle of Katie’s Cupboard by Kim Diehl…bingo! I’ll order another bundle, probably Wit & Wisdom to go with it and I should be all set!  I’ll be using a pale cream background and haven’t decided on the cornerstones or setting triangles yet.  I’ve also had to add a 1 1/2″ inner border to make the math work.  So in my travels I’ll have to keep my eyes open for a bit of yardage to complement things, but I’ve got time for that.

Since I’ll be making 249 blocks, including the pieced triangle border and corners, that means the goal will be five blocks per week for 50 weeks, leaving me two weeks to put it all together and begin quilting it.

Since I work between 70 – 80 hours a week, I think I need some time off…so I’m going to try and not work on weekends or possibly evenings. (notice I said “try”)  It’ll be a great time to work on some of my personal projects and just decompress from a long workweek.  Five blocks on a Saturday shouldn’t be too hard to accomplish….I hope…

Also this year I’ve got to work on my non-existent  blogging skills.  I think the Dear Jane project will help with that.  I’m going to plan on Sunday updates to get things started.

On the work front, I’ve got a couple new projects coming out with Bluprint (Craftsy).  “Heart of the Ocean” was first in the fall.  I just fell in love with the jewel tones in this quilt.

Next was “Prairie Garden”. This was fun to make and I really enjoyed the scrappy look. Yes, I was in such a hurry to get it out I forgot to take a picture of it….like usual.

On the sewing table now is the last one for Bluprint at this time, “Punch Bowl”.  An easy pineapple block in two sizes gives way to a very fun design.  I think this one will be coming out in the spring?

Then I am making a couple for Maywood Studio… All American and Blown Leaves. These should be out soon. The fabrics are just awesome and I can’t wait to play with them!

I guess that’s it for this post.  I better get back to my sewing machine, as I’ve got a lot to do and not a lot of time to get it all done.

I hope you and yours had a safe, awesome holiday season and I look forward to bending your ear in this new year.

Happy Quilting,

Christine
